The European Union Centres Network (EUCN) was very pleased to co-organize the first public lecture in New Zealand of His Excellency Mr Sem Fabrizi, Ambassador of the European Union to Australia and New Zealand on Thursday, 14 November 2013. The lecture was held at the Grand Hall in the Parliament Building in Wellington and hosted by Mr Paul Goldsmith, National Party MP (Epsom) and chairman of the New Zealand - European Parliament Friendship Group. Representing the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs (NZIIA), Hon Sir Douglas Kidd introduced Ambassador Fabrizi before an audience of approximately 100 guests. Ambassador Fabrizi addressed the economic situation in Europe, the European Union's expanding role in the world and the evolving relationship between the EU and New Zealand before taking questions.
His Excellency Mr Sem Fabrizi has been Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Australia and to New Zealand since September 2013. An Italian career diplomat, he served as Advisor for External Relations to the President of the European Council in Brussels (2010 - 2013), responsible for Asia and MENA regions and global architecture (G8/G20). Prior to that, Ambassador Fabrizi was Diplomatic Advisor for EU and Asian affairs (2008 - 09) and for Asian and African affairs (2006 - 2008) in the Italian Prime Minister's Office in Rome. He was Head of the European Parliament Office in the Italian Permanent Representative Mission to the EU in Brussels (2009 - 2010) and has also served in Geneva at the Italian Permanent Mission to the WTO and other International Organisations (2002 - 2005), and in Beijing as Deputy Head of the Economic and Commercial Office at the Italian Embassy in the People's Republic of China (1999 - 2002). At the MFA in Rome Ambassador Fabrizi was responsible for the Common Agricultural Policy Agenda 2000 negotiations for the EU Department (1996 - 1999); and Member of the Coordination Unit of the Secretary General (2005 - 2006). Ambassador Fabrizi holds degrees in International Law and International Economy from La Sapienza University in Rome, and completed the postgraduate programme in diplomacy at the School of Government of LUISS University, Rome. Lieutenant in the Italian army (1991 - 1992 - promoted 1st in his class). Awarded the honour Cavaliere Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana – by the Presidency of the Italian Republic (2005).
