Visit of Jose Manual Barroso

The EUCN was fortunate enough to attend events in Auckland on September the 8th with President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso who was visiting New Zealand as the EU’s representative at the Pacific Islands Forum meeting. The EUCN sent a delegation of 12 scholarship students and ten staff members up to Auckland for the 8th which started with a public address by Barroso at the University of Auckland, followed by a Question and Answer section and finishing with a luncheon at the Royal Yacht Squadron co-hosted with the New Zealand-Europe Business Council. President Barroso exhibited copious amounts of charisma and charm in delivering his various speeches throughout the day; all which touched on the EU’s relationship with the EU. In question time, President Barroso’s ability to switch between technical questions from various areas and angles was also very impressive. Staff and students were appreciative at the opportunity to meet such an important political figure as well as take in the atmosphere of the Rugby World Cup which started the following day.
